Goji Berry Juice: Is it a Fad or Really Good for You?

by Alice Seba and Mila Sidman

It seems like every day there’s a new supplement or product on the market guaranteed to make you look and feel younger. One of the latest additions is lycium barbarum, also known as the goji berry. Goji berries are grown in the Himalayan Mountains and have been used medicinally there for centuries. Just recently their amazing nutrition has become available all over the world through goji juice.

Marketers of goji products often cite the case study of Li Chung Yun, a man who reportedly lived 256 years. He attributed his long life to several practices, including eating goji berries. People who knew him claimed he only appeared 50 years old when he was actually over 200.

Goji berries are known for more than their anti-aging properties. They have been used extensively in eastern medicine and are considered effective for improving general health. These little berries are often touted for improving mood, strength, weight loss, and immune functioning and lowering cholesterol. Their antioxidant power can even protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

In addition to keeping your body healthy, these amazing berries have also been used to treat many diseases and disorders. They may help people with insomnia, morning sickness, obesity, enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, menstrual cramps, and heart problems. They’re even being studied in parts of the world as a treatment for cancer.

Right now, you’re probably thinking that this all sounds too good to be true. How could a berry possibly have all these benefits? Well, modern science is doing a lot to explain how this food can be so great. Goji berries contain extremely high amounts of antioxidants. These compounds protect cells from free radicals, and prevent aging and certain cancers. In addition to these antioxidants, goji berries contain:

• 21 different minerals • 19 amino acids • All 8 essential amino acids • More cartenoids than any other food, including beta carotene • Large amounts of vitamins C, E, and B • A strong antifungal and antibacterial • Large amounts of protein • An anti-inflammatory • Polysaccharides • Several other powerful compounds known to fight cancer and other conditions.

While many health claims of goji juice marketers are not yet substantiated, it is clear that these little berries have some big health benefits. Research also suggests that goji juice provides more benefit than dried goji berries.

Here’s some more great news. Goji berries aren’t just for adults or even humans. Children and pets have been found to benefit from goji berries as well. With goji juice, you can improve the health, mood, and performance of your whole family. Just talk to your pediatrician (or vet) to find out proper dosage.

Unlike modern medicines, herbal remedies, such as goji juice, are not highly regulated. This means you should take extra steps to ensure you’re getting a quality product. Be sure to read labels, ask questions, and verify research on the specific product you plan to buy. This will ensure you’re getting the full effect of these powerful berries.
