Real and Imagined Limitations

by Andrew Bui

Have you ever thought about mind restrictions? They are rather intriguing. Somebody asked me once if I thought they are real. Several constraints in my experience popped into my head, suddenly. For instance, my family wasn't wealthy at all. And yet, I always dreamed of going to college. I guess many folks would consider that a limitation. However, I was awarded a scholarship that paid all my tuition fees, after I applied to each one I could find and was exceptional in high school. I did everything from waitressing to working retail, morning and evening, in order to pay the rest of my costs. Other people I knew who had similar experiences to mine thought their upbringing was a barrier, but I didn't. They didn't even try for the scholarship applications, and did not go on to learn and have some of the exciting experiences I did.

So obviously in that situation, I found an instance in which a limitation by most people's standards, wasn't really a limitation at all. Even given the obstacles, there were many options. While it turns out that attending college itself wasn't a barrier, maybe trying to go to a more pricey one would have been. That truly would have been a significant barrier. Truthfully, if I set my mind to it, I genuinely could have at least a bit of success in anything I desired. Let's discuss my chances in the WNBA. Do you think I'd be any good at it, let alone make it onto a squad? (I'm actually very short!) Think about how skilled Stevie Wonder is, in spite of his being blind; if he can do that, then maybe I can excel at basketball! I might not go on to win national champions - although that, too, has been shown in the past!

And so, with every example I could think of, it seems there are two levels of limitations - the ones I have control over, and the ones I don't. So like with women's basketball, I don't have power over my height, but I do have control over how much I'm going to let that limitation stop me from being a good basketball player. Such a restriction is one that is self-imposed, if I'm able to plow through it with a certain amount of labor and strategy.

And on that note, and suddenly inspired to get over my self-imposed limitations, some research suggested there are resources that help in lifting these limitations, somewhat quickly, and even permanently. Executive Success Programs appears to be strongly suggested for this intent. I've always desired to be a strong swimmer. That's a challenge I'd like to address this July!
