Your First Web Page
Part of - Building a Professional Web Site on a Budget
This is the second paper in the sequence called "Building a Professional Web site without breaking the bank". The initial essay had you acquiring your domain name. What's the next logical step? Probably not which you think.
I know you want to get right into it, setting up your internet site, adding graphics, signing up for AdSense and turning a profit. Trust me, this will take a while, so relax and read.
The first thing you need to do is think about the lookup phrases that you think search engines will use to find your internet site. Your site is your foreword to the web world.
You've already thought about keywords (search phrases), now what? Take some time and sit down at your personal favourite word processor and write a 500-700 word entry to your internet site. Make sure you incorporate your lookup phrases and keywords liberally in the entry. This is going to be key to driving traffic to your pages, the sooner you do it, the better results you will see.
I've done my best, now what? Good work? Now have a friend go over it, is it appealing? Incorporating keywords into your writing isn't easy. It takes a while to have good writing which is still search engine friendly. I still don't have the hang of it and I have 14 full fledged web sites with a total of more than four thousand pages (I have help). Of course, by now you're not studying this for my writing style, but for my experience.
Your home page is a go, now what? Aren't you impatient? Well, ideally you need to get that page up on your web site. I am not going to go through this step by step, but I am going to recommend a few open source (no cost) products which will make your world wide web life much easier. There are guides around the internet to installing these on your web host. If you've chosen godaddy (as indicated in my earliest report), then I've actually installed each of these quite easily.
Is a blog site what you want? If you're figuring on writing blogs on your internet site, then I suggest Serendipity (you can find out how to download this from my world wide web page, listed in the author resource box below). I've tried three different blog engines and Serendipity is my personal favourite. It is the easiest to incorporate, easy to install and changing styles is quite easy.
That's it for this posting, I threw in the blog just to whet your appetite. My next essay will mention which software I incorporate to set up more complex web sites with full menu systems. Don't miss that one, or better still, visit my web site Open Source Depot to find out where to getthis great no cost software.
