How to Stay Safe in Parking Areas and Structures
Parking lots are the scene for many attacks. Before you park your car, follow these tips:Place valuable items and packages in the trunk or out of sight before you arrive at your destination. Drive with your car doors locked and windows shut. Keep your wallet and purse out of sight while driving. Do not leave them next to you on the car seat. If you have the option, choose a parking structure or ramp that is well-lighted. Park in a well-lighted area of the lot or ramp. When you can, park your car as close as possible to an exit in a ramp, or near the attendant's office in a lot. If you have to leave your key with attendant, leave only your car key. Check parking ramp or lot for security protection, such as video cameras and security patrols. Do not leave any valuable items where they can be seen from outside the car. Keep your parking stub.Walk in the center of the ramp driveway. Display a unconcerned and alert.attitude. Look inside and around your car before you unlock the door and get in. Lock your door immediately and start your engine and get the car moving as soon as possible. If you are followed while driving, go to the closest police or fire station and honk your horn. Carry your cell phone, and call 911. Do not go home or pull over to the side of the road. Most people believe that once they reach their cars they are safe. This is not true, because cars offer places for thieves to hide and obscure vision of other pedestrians. When you get to your car, take time to look around and behind you. Avoid tunnel vision and forgetting your surroundings. When thieves see that you have lost track of where you are and seem disoriented they are more likely to attack. When walking to and from your car, use your possessions as weapons, and have them ready. Items like keys and purses won't beat guns or knives, but they will fend off weaponless thieves.Travel in groups or while other pedestrians are around if possible. If you are alone stay in your car until you see trustworthy people walk by, and walk near them.Park as close to your destination as possible and if you are worried about the area stay in lit places and out only during the day time.Report suspicious looking and loitering people. Talk to security when they drive by or make a call from inside a building.Keeping safe is being alert and using common sense. Police officers agree that, of all of these tips, being aware of your surroundings is the most important one. Remain calm in any situation, but yell and get the attention of people around you if you feel unsafe. You can never be too cautious.
