Web Site Design - Content is Everything

Without good content a web site has no future

by Sarah Hawkins

With good content that is updated regularly a web site can become what its owner requires, a successful online shop or even a respected source of information on a selected subject. Both of these can enable the owner to have a source of income that no-one wants to turn down, from either online sales or advertising revenue, including the holy grail of advertising, an income from pay per click (PPC) advertising.

The Right Content For Your Web Site No matter how sincere you are when first building a website, without visitors it is pointless and frustrating. It is necessary to consider

What content do you want to display What content will bring you the most visitors Whilst these two may be viewed as being the same thing, they’re not.

The Online Shop For example, a web site that sells baby and nursery equipment will have a comprehensive range of products within its catalogue but to differentiate it against its competitors it should provide additional services that will set it apart from the rest.

Therefore the content the owner wants to display is products that can be bought online, but what will bring in even more visitors will be related information, maybe product news from manufacturers, articles from leading authorities in baby care or even a directory that provides details on baby changing facilities in major towns and cities. This will bring in additional visitors, those who are not trawling the internet for the lowest priced goods and expose them to the primary goal of the web site, to sell baby and nursery equipment.

The Information Site Our second example is a web site that has been created to bring information together on home security. Articles have been written on burglar alarms and CCTV, ensuring that the rules of copyright have not been infringed but visitors are lacking. In this case, articles that have been written can initially do well in the search engines, but over time they can be considered as less relevant if the modified date of the web site remains the same. Regularly updated web sites always perform better in search engine result pages so here there are two immediate options. Add a news section to the homepage, from either one of the many news services or request it is sent from industry manufacturers who will be happy to promote their products.

As with the online shop, this is actually providing an additional service whose prime aim is to bring in visitors who will also become exposed to the informative articiles on the web site.

Another option here would be to keep adding to and amending the exisiting articles. Any article, however relevant to a subject, will become out of date over time as technology and trends move. The principles may remain the same but by updating some information the website is noted by the search engine spiders as being modified so helping in the all important rankings.
