Protecting Yourself and Your Home

PROTECTING YOURSELF AND YOUR HOME

We spend every hour so casually that we don't realize that there's one chance out of four that we will be victims of burglaries and violence. What's more is that worrying about these things will keep us from enjoying some carefree time. So what do we do? Crimes cannot be foreseen in this age. The only solution is to help protect yourself, your family, and your home from break-ins.

¡¤ Install a Security System

Nine out of ten convicted burglars have said that they would avoid a house protected by an alarm system. Your security system must include alarms, detectors, and motion sensors. These devices are the simplest or security systems, but they can be the most vital when it comes to securing your home and detecting break-ins. Make sure that your security systems are connected to your nearest police and fire stations so that assistance will come in handy when an emergency arises.

¡¤ Protect Your Home even When You're Out

Burglary reaches its peak on July and August. This is usually the time when we go on vacations and leave our home alone. Make sure that your home is secure by having monitored home security systems. We wouldn't want to come home from an exciting vacation to a home with lots of missing possessions and hustling with the paperwork with the police department.

When we go on a vacation, or when we're out for quit a while, do not leave a message on your answering machine saying you're not home. Leave a message which won't give burglars the thumbs-up sign, like ¡°Sorry, but I'm busy right now¡¡± or ¡°can't come to the phone right now¡¡±

Make sure that your mail or newspapers, or other subscriptions, do not accumulate. This will automatically tell burglars that no one's home. Check with the post office and request that they hold the mail for the time being. You should also have your newspapers and subscriptions suspended. You may also have a friend or neighbor help in checking mail, subscriptions, or flyers.

It would also help if you leave your car in your garage or driveway. You can also have a neighbor park his or her car in there so that strangers won't know that no one is really home.

¡¤ Check Entry and Exit Points

For normal and sliding glass doors, bolts are still a great help in locking up. Get into the habit of locking all doors and windows in your house when you're out. This should be specially done between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. because this is when burglaries usually occur.

Check exterior door hinges. They should be on the inside rather than on the outside. An intruder can remove the pins and pull the door out if the hinges are on the outside.

Don't hide your keys in easy places, like in your mailboxes, under doormats or pots, or above doorways.

Don't forget to install alarms and sensors on your doors and windows.

¡¤ For Your Protection

Always take note of all your valuables. It is recommended that instead of keeping it at home, you should keep it other safe places, like in a safe deposit box.

Service representatives and salespeople will come from time to time. Always ask to check their ID and take note of them. You can also call the company they're in to confirm their identities. When all is confirmed, then feel free to let them in your home.

These things aren't that hard to do. All we need is caution and simple actions like having ourselves home security systems and checking our homes in and out will result in a happy and protected home.
