Could My Son Be Rodeo Winner?
"The time came to go birthday shopping for our three year old son, when I saw Toys R Us coupons in the weekend flyer. My wife and I picked the coupons we thought were the best, and then had to deal with one more detail, before heading to the store. We needed someone to keep an eye on our kid. We got a babysitter and drove thirty miles to the shop to buy some new gifts for our only son.
We each had contrasting preferences about what to get for him. Yet, we did know that we were looking for a toy that was safe for him to play on. After walking around the store for a little bit we chose a rocking horse. It was the largest one that they sold. The horse was well-made with durable springs, so we thought our son could never find a way to injure himself with this.
After returning home, our attempts to wrap up our present were a pain in the butt. We went through two rolls of paper and stuck a roll of tape on it, so that he wouldn't be able to tell what it was. Thankfully, I had bought some extra paper at the store where we got the horse. The bits of paper that I had salvaged from last year, would never have completed our project. As his big day drew closer, we pulled the present into the front room and put a blanket over it as camouflage.
His special day came at last, so it was time for him to reveal his present. He was happy with the gigantic horse and enjoyed riding his new toy. It was difficult to get him to get off of his horse. We had it about a month before my curious child decided that he would try something new. As I supervised, he began rocking his horse faster and faster. At first I was laughing watching him, then my child relaxed his grip on the handles and slipped off. He flew partially across the room and touched down face first on our hard floor. I got to him as quickly as I could and grabbed him into my arms. At that moment, blood had already starting gushing from his mouth. He was squealing loudly, and after some inspecting, it looked like he had cut his tongue.
I was thinking about what had to be done now. Grabbing a towel close by, I clamped it on his tongue. My son was mad about this, but it halted the bleeding. I put a frozen Popsicle in his mouth and headed to the hospital. I learned that if your son is an adventurer, then you have to be cautious, even with safe toys."
