Modern Day Cigar Aficionados

by Amber Singleton

Cigars, just like cigar humidors, wooden jewelry boxes and other luxury gifts can be considered as very valuable items. More and more people develop a love for cigars each day. However, have you ever wondered just how cigars are made?

Cigars are usually classified according to the strength of its taste. The categories are full-bodied, medium, or mild. The strength is measured according to the sensation of the smoke inside the mouth. Because it is the experience of the smoke is subjective, cigars are rated according to strength range, such as "medium to full" or "mild to medium." Experienced cigar makers have already mastered the art of putting certain types of tobacco leaves together to achieve the desired taste. However, it is in the perfect blend of aroma and taste where the difficulty lies.

The size of cigars is determined by their length and diameter. The latter, also referred to as ring gage, is measured by a standard of 1/64 of an inch. A cigar that is said to be 50x5 in dimension is actually calculated as 50 times the 1/64 inch in diameter and 5 inches in length. Cigars are usually cylindrical; in the rare cases they aren't, remember that the ring gage is almost always the bigger one. There are also different names for different types of cigars. Some of them include Corona, Panatela, Robusto, and Churchill, among others. While these do not connote definite measurements, you will get an idea of how large and long a cigar is by noting down its name. For example, Robusto cigars are typically 48-54 in diameter and has a length of 4.5 to 5.5 inches.

There are many cigar lovers or cigar aficionados today and why wouldn't there be. Smoking a cigar is considered as one of the activities which could not be compared to any other. Here are some more information on cigar aficionados as well as some tips on how to enjoy your cigar more.

Movies often show high-profile individuals with a cigar in their mouths as they exude a menacing or malevolent aura. Other shows feature cigars being lit in celebration for a sealed deal or a newborn baby. With all these images, it is no wonder that many are taking an interest in cigars. These are also just a couple of the reasons why cigars, along with cigar humidors and wooden jewelry boxes are preferred as gifts to give. Neophytes to cigar smoking all have concerns about the proper way to smoke cigars, whether they are supposed to be inhaled, how they are lit, and so much more.

Lighting a cigar properly is an important step to enjoying your cigar fully. Expert cigar smokers will tell you that in order to light your cigar properly, you would need special clippers that have been designed for snipping the edges of the end that you're going to place inside the mouth. This is called the head. When you have accomplished that, you are now ready to light it. However, any old lighter might not work as well as wooden matches (the cedar varieties are the best). When the match is lit, hold the cigar's foot over the flame and draw. Cigars should not come in direct contact with the flame so as to preserve its flavor. When you finally have your cigar lit, you can now proceed to smoking it.

Cigarette smokers are used to flicking their cigarettes to get rid of the ashes. In case of cigars, you should avoid this habit so as to retain the cherry, or the lit parts, on the foot of your cigar. You can just place it over an ashtray and allow the ashes to fall naturally. You may be tempted to smoke the cigar all the way down to a nub, but this is very inadvisable because the end is bitter in taste and it can ruin your whole experience. A cigar should also be held between the forefinger and the thumb. Anyone who does not do so is seen as someone who doesn't have any class or simply a newbie.

The experience of smoking cigars is best enjoyed slowly, so don't rush through it. Besides, cigars don't come cheap. Cigars are best enjoyed after a full meal, complemented with a glass of brandy or scotch. You can sip your drink and then puff on the cigar, but remember not to inhale completely. Cigars do not have filters that can keep some of the bad substances out of your lungs. Inhaling cigar smoke can be detrimental to your health, and besides, there is no added flavor or satisfaction to be gained from inhaling deeply. Finally, cigar smoking is largely a social event. Smoke with friends, and share with them the experience of indulgence and success.
