Cooking is Not Only for Cooks

by Katherine Quirke

Cooking, a pleasure for some a headache for others. It isn't so long ago that most meals were prepared and consumed in the home. With the changes in our society our cities now boast a range of eating opportunities outside the home. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of eating out?

In our consumer world eating out is no longer a treat. Many now have conceived the idea that eating out shows affluence while others feel they don't have the skills to cook a good meal at home. Lives are fast paced so there is a further belief that cooking at home takes time.

Cooking at home is often faster than eating out. The benefits are enormous. You know exactly what you are putting in your meals and you have the double benefit of enjoying the magic of creation.

For those who believe they cannot cook it is surprising how little skill is required to create a good meal. Many meals are so simple that if you can boil water then you can make dinner.

So why is cooking a meal at home faster than eating out? Simple, by the time you have decided where to eat, travelled there, ordered it, eaten the food and come back home you could have enjoyed a great meal at home. It is my opinion eating out is no longer a treat and that is a shame.

With so many cooking shows on our televisions now there is a new generation of aspiring cooks. For the most part these shows are great but the reality is the majority of them offer dishes that you need to purchase special ingredients that only a little is used and the rest goes to waste. What every home needs is great basics in their cupboards and the skills to turn those basics into a variety of quality meals.

Creating a good meal is not a miracle. It is an enjoyment that can involve a whole family. Take creating a pizza for example. Pizza cooked and created at home is better quality than take-out and children love topping them. They bring families together with the creation and the eating and give children a great start to cooking good food.

The days are gone when as a child you would watch your Mum make a cake and wait for the chance to lick the beater. Why not cook cakes at home. Children love to help, the cakes will be made with real milk, sugar, butter and not processed products that is mostly found in the shop bought cakes. This is the same for biscuits. To do this is not hard. In just 15 minutes you can whip up a cake and have it in the oven cooking.

So next time you say you cannot cook stop yourself and ask, what can I create to eat that is simple tasty and nutritious.
