Change Your Attitude About Housework

by JD Hoopes

Women have generally always had the role of caretakers of the home, but now, in many families, we are also the breadwinners. It can be very hard juggling both roles especially when housework gets in the way.

There is something that can help each of us. Getting rid of the anger and frustration that comes from living in a chaotic home can change your life. We all feel that if we had more help that our homes would stay clean. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a full time house keeper, enjoy! But each of us still deserves to live in a clean home.

The roles of women have expanded enormously. Yet our toilets still need to be cleaned, clothes have to be cleaned, dishes need to be washed, and someone has to do it! Complaining that you do not have enough help or time is not going to get it done and a fussy mom or complaining spouse or friend is never any fun to be with.

Women often begin to feel that they are servants in their own homes, but it is not the work, but our attitudes that make us slaves. With a change of outlook, you can quit nagging your family -- all of a sudden the kids start helping, the husband starts picking up after himself, and soon everyone is joining in to take care of the home together - all because the caretaker started setting the example!

Doing housework with love is a great change in attitude. When you can clean a toilet because you love your family, it is no longer a nasty chore. A daily routine of cleaning the bathroom keeps it from getting so dirty that it isn't that bad anyway.

When you keep score or wonder whose turn it is to do certain chores, good attitudes go out the window! All this does is harbor resentment and anger. Frustration comes from not being able to get it all done and feeling like you need to. The self-doubt invades us when we are so stressed because we can't do it all and we see others that seem to be handling it just fine; anger takes over and we start blaming others because we can't seem to have this perfect picture of home the way we pictured it was going to be. But we really can do what needs to be done if we will establish simple routines in our homes and lives.

For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. If you will take time to establish some new guidelines in keeping your home clean, you might actually begin to see changes in your attitude and the attitudes of your family. And you will be pleasantly surprised by the reactions you get.

Try something different. We've all heard the saying, "If you keep doing it the way you always have, how can you expect a change?" By throwing out those negative attitudes that have gotten you nowhere, and replacing them with the love that you want in your home, you will set the example your family will love!
