The Sony Playstation 3, the Microsoft WII , and the Xbox 360
This year there is a game war. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are going head-to- head for high performance supremacy, each looking to outperform, or out feature, each other. The Sony play station 3 and the Xbox 360 are compatible if you add a $200 add-on for the rival format HD DVD high-definition player to the Xbox. With the PlayStation 3 the most powerful system on the market, the Wii will likely be more prevalent this holiday season. Both new consoles are squaring off against the Xbox 360, Microsoft's latest generation platform, which has already been in gamers' homes for a year and boasts more robust online features than either the PlayStation 3 or the Wii. They are all expensive to buy, but the enjoyment will be worth the price. Both Microsoft and Sony have been targeting older gamers with a slew of violent, gore-soaked mature rated titles for their machines PlayStation boasts "Resistance: Fall of Man," an alternate history shooter by Insomniac Games that pits American and British forces against a mutating alien horde during the 1950s in a universe where World War II never happened. Nintendo's rollout line up includes a host of familiar titles. Beloved titles "Super Mario Bros.," "The Legend of Zelda" and "Metroid" have been staples throughout Nintendo's storied history and the game giant will be releasing new chapters in each franchise at the launch of its new console. The system will come bundled with a sports game that the company hopes will show off the versatility of its new controller as gamers swing their golf clubs and tennis rackets. Along with the old standbys, Nintendo will also launch with "Red Steel," a sword-fighting game that allows players to get into the action by swinging the controller wand like a sword. Xboxers are eagerly awaiting the third edition of the Halo series, expected next year. The shooter almost single-handedly solidified Microsoft's long shot entry into the home gaming world on the original Xbox. Meanwhile, "Gears of War," a violent, post-apocalyptic first person shooter is expected to be the must have Xbox 360 game of the season.
