Tips For Hiring a Contractor For Home Improvement Projects

by Kathy Jenkins

If you have some home improvement projects, you may be wondering if hiring a contractor is a good idea. There are always a few options -do it yourself, hire casual labor such as a handyman or find a licensed contractor. Only you can decide which choice is right, but in this article we'll be looking at some factors to consider when you're thinking of hiring a contractor.

Almost everyone is budget conscious nowadays, but you should still resist the temptation of choosing the lowest priced contractor you can find. The reason for this is that your home is probably your most valuable asset, and you want to improve or renovate it to preserve or increase its value.

So when you hire someone to do any work, you want to make sure you're getting the most qualified person possible, and someone who's using quality materials. If you get a few estimates (which you always should), and they're roughly the same, you may want to choose the cheapest one if you have no other preferences. However, if one contractor claims he can do the job for a much cheaper price than the others, you should be suspicious, because it's likely that he's going to be skimping on something important.

One way to protect yourself from hiring the wrong person or company is to ask for bank and credit references that you can check. While this may sound extreme, you can't be too careful when it comes to someone who's going to be working on your property. If you don't know the contractor it's especially important to make sure he has credit in the area. Otherwise, you could be dealing with someone transient who could just pack up and leave at any time. A legitimate local business should have credit with local suppliers. Of course, we're referring to a licensed contractor here, not someone like a handyman or maybe a student who you hire to do a small job.

When it comes to dealing with a contractor, the two most important times are when you sign the initial contract and when the job is complete. It's very important that you make sure everything is in order before you sign off on the job and pay the contractor the balance. You naturally have to make sure all the work has been done as promised. The contractor should also have cleaned up the site and taken any debris away (you should have this in your contract). Finally, it's also important that the contractor can prove to you that he's paid all suppliers and any subcontractors on the job, or these people could possibly hold you responsible.

The tips we've shared on hiring a contractor aren't meant to talk you out of it, only to make sure you do your research and protect your interests. When it comes to home improvement projects, having a contractor do the work is a big step and can be costly. On the other hand, if you plan it properly, it can add lots of value to your home, and make it more comfortable and appealing.
