1. Assess Characteristics: Your job as a nursing assistant is going to be very demanding and you need to ensure you possess some of the necessary attributes which will enable you to tackle the challenges daily. You should be compassionate, patient, and energetic. You are going to be on your feet all day and for long hours at a time. You need to also be able to help patients both physically and emotionally.

2. Volunteer: The next thing you should do is focus on getting as much volunteer work in as you can. You can volunteer at your local hospital, a medical clinic, or even a doctor's office. This will allow you to get some experience under your belt to help with your clinical experience that is required before you can earn your CNA certification.

3. Complete Training: You should enroll in a CNA course. These courses, depending on where you live, will require anywhere from 75-125 hours as well as clinical hours of hands on training. There are different lengths of classes and they can last anywhere from 4-18 weeks. Again, this all depends on the state you live in.

4. Take the CNA Exam: Taking the CNA test can be stressful at times but if you prepare and study, you can rest assured that you are going to pass it. Once you pass the test you are going to be able to apply for your certification. You can find prep materials online to help you study the right things to help pass the test.

5. CEUs: Throughout the 2 year period of your license, you are going to have to have at least 24 hours of continuing education each year. These are designed to ensure you are up to date on certain techniques and skills that are required by the state you live in. These can be completed online or even by the facility you are going to be working for. These normally include Alzheimer's, domestic violence, HIPPA, OSHA, and other skills that pertain to the field of nursing. You will also need to keep your CPR license updated as well as this is another requirement of being a CNA.
