What Are The Responsibilities Of A Bartender?

If you want to become a bartender, you have to understand that bartenders have legal responsibilities. You should be aware of the laws that govern your job. Yes, the responsibility is huge when you're serving alcohol. Here are some of the things that you need to know:

1. Certification - certified bartenders are more responsible alcohol sellers. This is the reason why most establishments prefer to hire those who are certified. You don't need to go elsewhere to be certified. You can just get your certification online.

2. Check Identification - if you think that the person buying the alcoholic drink looks too young to buy one, check his or her ID. Never settle with just seeing an ID in their wallet; you have to ask them to hand it to you. Touch the ID and check if it's valid. Examples of valid IDs are: state IDs, driver's license, passport or military ID. Student IDs do not count. Also, make sure you check all the information found on the ID: check the picture, height, sex, weight, hair, expiration date and so on.

3. F.E.A.R. Method - fear is an abbreviation for:

F - Feel the ID for any evidence of tampering E - Examine the information A - Ask questions (the person's birth date, address, etc.) R - Return his or her ID

4. Don't Serve Alcoholic Beverages To Minors - this is extremely prohibited. In the US, you have to be 21 years old to be able to buy alcoholic beverages. Aside from checking for proper IDs, there are physical and behavioral signs that can help you identify a minor and these are the following:

a. No underarm hair and signs of beard growth (boys) b. Check the pitch of his voice. Boys usually have changing pitch or high-pitched voice c. Baby fat that is not related with obesity for both boys and girls d. No signs of pelvic or breast development for girls e. They dress, accessorize and sport a hairstyle for young people f. Gathering in groups g. Easily intimidated or embarrassed

5. Don't Serve More Beer To Drunk People - you could go to jail if you serve an intoxicated individual with alcohol and they get into an accident. Always be observant and check for signs of intoxication before you serve them another bottle of beer.

6. Prevent Intoxication - try to remind people to slow down drinking. Also, before you serve a new batch of alcoholic beverage, you have to remove the empty glasses first. Serve water and, as much as possible, avoid serving pitchers. These are the responsibilities of bartenders that you need to know.
