Why is Plus Size Fashion Suddenly Très Chic?

The fashion industry gets its head sorted and now everyone can look fabulous!

by Sam Qam

Something had to happen in the fashion industry after so many years of models with tooth pick ankles and eating disorder CVs tramping up and down the

catwalks of Milan and New York, thrusting unnatural and unhealthy body images into the innocent eyes of the worlds self conscious teenagers. Now things

are looking up, models have, in general, filled out and designers are catering for more women with average body sizes and more shops now stock plus size

clothing. So what happened?

Celebrities

One answer could be that more equal opportunities are being adhered to in films and television. There is no doubt that the average sized woman is now

more prevalent on our screens than the unsavoury waifs we used to see everywhere. Our breakfast sofas and evening soap stars have a more normal feel to

their characters as their body sizes match the general public which they are supposed to be mimicking. What we see on TV affects how we see ourselves,

especially when it comes to body image.

Economic Downturn

Perhaps it is the state of the world's economy which has dragged the fashion houses of Paris and London towards a more mainstream audience? While their

dresses may have cost an arm and a leg, their balances will no doubt have suffered due to the luxury nature of their goods. By drawing in a 'bigger'

audience their revenue stream will no doubt have gone up.

More Plus Sized Shops

With so many people seeking things like plus size dresses it is no wonder that there are now a lot more quality plus size clothes shops available. When

in the past a clothing entrepreneur may have dismissed the idea of opening a store featuring things like plus size 28 dresses; now with a growing market

of suppliers with great products there is better motivation for people looking for ways to make money. The more good quality plus sized shops there are,

the more confident larger people will be about shopping and will no doubt do it more regularly.

Moral

Has the moral message finally got through to the world of high fashion? High street stores have been ahead of the game in this sense as many of the big

named clothing brands have made a point of how they cater for the larger frame. Selfridges plus size and Harrods plus size are terms which you would not

have expected to see several years ago. It may just be a matter of time before we see Gucci Plus size on the market too.
