In the book of Esther, it is written: "In the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, on its thirteenth day…on the day that the enemies of the Jews were expected to prevail over them, it was turned about: the Jews prevailed over their enemies." - Esther 9:1 "And they gained relief on the fourteenth (day), making it a day of feasting and gladness." - Esther 9:17 That feast is called Purim. The significance is that it recalls the defeat of a plot to exterminate the Jews. Now here's how the story unfolds. Esther was a Jew living in Persia (Iran) in the home of the King of Persia as his queen. The king didn't know she was Jewish. Her cousin Mordecai, who had raised her was being threatened by a very evil man, Haman, who was the advisor to the king. Mordecai would not bow down to Haman. So Haman was going to destroy all the Jews in Persia. The king gave his okay to this. Remember, he didn't know that Esther was Jewish, and he loved her very much. To make a long story short, Mordecai convinced Esther to go to the king and tell him what Haman was planning. The king sympathized with Esther and the Jews and the plot was thwarted. Haman was hung along with his sons. Thus brought about a feast which was called "Purim".
On March 7 at sundown, Purim started in the Jewish tradition. I probably would not have paid too much attention to the feast if it were not for the accelerating tension building between Israel and the United States regarding Iran, modern day Persia, and the threat by their president to destroy all of Israel. And the UN believes Iran is building nuclear bomb capabilities.
Later that week, Netanyahu and President Obama had a meeting. He told Netanyahu that the US had Israel's back. On Tuesday of that week, Obama clarified that he did not mean that he had Israel's back militarily. So tensions are growing. Netanyahu does not feel so secure about our support for Israel. And the Feast of Purim was the day in history when the Persian who wanted to destroy the Jews was thwarted. Could it be that God has a hand in what is happening? A few days later Netanyahu had another meeting with President Obama and gave him a copy of the book of Esther and indicated that Israel had many friends in the world.
The reason I mention this so emphatically, is because in the Judaism101 account of Purim, they mention an incident in 1953, where Josef Stalin was going to deport all the Jews in the Soviet Union to Siberia, and the day after the feast of Purim, Stalin suffered a fatal heart attack. The deportation never came about, Coincidence? I don't think so. We only believe in Holy Coincidence. Is God speaking to His people? Is God in charge? Are the Israelis our brothers and sisters?
Can we help them? We sure can. How do we help them? Pray! The power is always in the prayer. You might give your congressman or senator a call or e-mail. Tell them you want us to support Israel.
Thought for this week - Pray for World Peace
