Grants are highly competitive and will usually only be awarded for very specific business ventures and purposes. However, if you do fulfil the criteria, they have the massive bonus of not having to be paid back and being free of interest. There are grants available from the UK government, the European Union (EU), local councils and even charitable organisations. Currently there is a lot of EU support for agricultural businesses and UK support for environmentally friendly business schemes.

Make sure you apply for a grant when you are in the proposal stage of your business venture. Grants are only awarded to proposals not to businesses which have already started up. Each grant will have different criteria to be fulfilled for you to continue being eligible for the money on offer, it is possible for your grant to be taken away should you not comply with the agreements you made when you were provided with the grant by the organisation. One common condition of a grant is that you match the funds they provide you with.
