Learn to Play Bass Guitar

by Taylor Benjamin

The bass guitar is often overlooked as an instrument to play. People tend to think of it as way too easy and not as fun as the typical acoustic or electric guitar. That is not necessarily the case. As with any instrument, you can choose the level of challenges you face in the bass guitar. You can become really good at it if you are compelled to play above and beyond the expectations placed upon you.

Because of the lower popularity of the bass guitar there is a much higher demand for bass guitarists in bands. In fact there are approximately 10 acoustic guitarists for every bass player out there. Those are great odds for a bass guitar player looking for a group to get involved with. So if you are still thinking it over, learn to play the guitar - just make it the bass, not the acoustic. Too many players are in that boat already.

Try listening to the bass in your favorite songs. It has a real effect on the song that many completely forget about. But it is there, and it gives the music depth and power that it would not otherwise have. A couple of great songs to consider listening to are Blind 182's "First Date" and Rancid's "Maxwell Murder." Once you have done that, imagine the songs without the bass. They would not nearly be the same. Nor would they be as good. If you learn how to play the guitar, then you will be a part of something great - even if you are not the lead guitarist and singer. That does not mean the bass guitarist is less important to the band.

My roommate in college was a brilliant bass guitar player. He found endless opportunities to play in front of other students, and even locals at the tavern down the road. He would practice many days and nights while the two of us were in the room chatting, and I was amazed at how the bass guitar really did have a different sound and feel. But most importantly, he thoroughly enjoyed playing - both for himself and for others. The bass guitar is not a chore, and it should never feel like one to the guitarist. If you learn how to play the guitar, you will not regret your decision (assuming you put your heart and soul into being a great player). Playing the bass guitar is truly a very rewarding experience.
