How to Buy Digital SLR Cameras

by Mark Etinger

When you want to buy a new camera a lot has to be considered. These days, the new Nikon cameras are geared toward specific kinds of photographers - the pocket-shooter, the point and shooter, the hybrid still and video taker, and the professional SLR cameras. Read on to see what kind of Nikon compact digital cameras are best for you.

It's no longer about megapixels when it comes to SLR cameras. These days you want a camera with a large sensor and lens, so that you get higher quality photos. In the camera world, bigger is better, which is why a huge-lensed Nikon SLR takes such beautiful photos. But sometimes a shot can be ruined by being half a second slow. To prevent this, look for the camera's "continuous shooting" or "burst mode" specs in shots per second. If action and sports photography is your bag, you probably need a mode of 3 or more shots per second. These times are also without flash, since it takes longer for the flash to reload. Cameras built for faster picture taking often have lower resolution. Also examine how long it takes for the camera to turn on. Anything near a second is pretty fast.

To other photographers, a camera's size and weight are more important than anything else. The problem with tiny cameras is that they have small buttons and are often set to automatic modes, which work well but allow for a less personal feel to your shot.

Typically if you're choosing a smaller camera, it's better to have a more powerful zoom than a higher resolution. That allows you to choose the resolution you want by zooming in accordingly. If you're buying a lens for Nikon SLR cameras, look for in-camera stabilization. If you need a wide angle lens, start at 28 mm; the lower the number the wider the lens.

As for storage, most cameras use Secure Digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC). The latter offer up to 32GB but don't work on SD compatible slots. SDXC is even more extreme and offers up to 2TB. These aren't backward-compatible either.

These are some of the basics when it comes to buying SLR cameras. You should have a good idea of the kind of photos you'll be taking and what kind of camera you need. So now that you know, start shopping for the best Nikon cameras.
