What Type Of People Would Make Terrible Taxi Drivers?
It's not an easy job for everyone…
Taxis are a very common site on the streets of almost every town and city around the world. The UK is famous for its black cabs, New York is known for its yellow cabs and Thailand is awash with thousands of 'Tuk-Tuks' with their three wheels and buzzing motorbike engines. These vehicles are immediately recognisable and instantly associated with these cities, but what about the drivers? You never really know what you are going to get when you get into a taxi in any city. Will they be friendly? Will they be angry? Will the chew your ear off about their current divorce? Their demeanour can have a huge influence on how much you enjoy your journey.

While people who are friendly and good drivers will make great taxi drivers, what sort of people would make terrible taxi drivers?

Smokers

Smoking is normally not allowed in taxis. This is partly because it is basically a public place, but also because taxi drivers often share their cab with another driver or two. Someone who is a heavy smoker would make a terrible taxi driver as they would not be comfortable driving around all day, unable to smoke. This would likely make them more irritable or make them tend to stop every half an hour or so to have a cigarette. Not good for the passenger.

Angry People

Nicotine addiction aside, some people are just plain angry. This might be due to their personal situation or if they have just had a bad day or some other unknown factor. Angry people do not make good taxi drivers as they have to interact not only with lots of different people all day, but also with other drivers and traffic. Anger tends to bubble over more through stress and driving is inherently stressful.

Bad Hygiene

You don't want to be on the way to Belfast airport in one of the many Belfast city airport taxis and find that the driver is a bit smelly, or burps and farts a lot. This does not make for a pleasant journey in the slightest. Every Belfast taxi I have been in has been of the highest calibre but in all the cities in the world you can't always expect this.

Taxidermists

Taxidermy is the act of stuffing dead animals so that they can be displayed as trophies, for study or for in museums. Some people trained in this practice may be confused by the name and start working as a taxi driver. They may not necessarily make the best taxi drivers in the long term.
