Finding A Job Online

by Debbie Bissett

If you are searching for work then there is no better place to start looking than online. You can take full advantage of the many resources which are available to you, all from the comfort of your own home. There are many ways in which the internet can help you, from posting your resume and CV with databases, scouring open positions and applying to getting help and advice on interview techniques.A quick search using a popular search engine will give you access to hundreds of online job databases. A database such as this will list jobs in their own specialist category, which makes finding the ideal position so much easier. If you register with such a site, you are able to conduct immediate searches, have the site notify you by e-mail when a job matching your criteria is posted and store your CV online with them. Most sites also offer good job and careers advice free of charge. The internet also gives you access to local companies, very often the larger DIY stores and supermarkets will post job listings on their website. Many of them offer online applications or give telephone numbers for you to contact the recruiter to set up an interview. There are many sites which specialise in hosting your resume or CV in their databases. Depending on who you choose to go with this can mean that thousands of companies and recruiters can search databases for CV's and resumes which match their job openings. All sites of this type will e-mail you should an opening come in that matches your criteria. The better sites will allow you to monitor your CV or resume and here you can find out how many times it has been viewed, what kind of companies are viewing it and how long it has been since it was last looked at. You should always go back to the site and update your resume, even if you do not have anything new to add to it, if it has not been looked over in a while, you should reorganise it. Reorganising it will get it listed as being new which is more likely to catch a prospective employer’s eye. If you aren’t totally happy in your chosen career or just want to switch careers then the internet is a valuable source for researching different options and alternatives. There are a variety of self-assessment tools available online along with listings of career councillors and centres which you can get great advice. To make it easier during your search for work online you should gather some keywords together, by asking yourself several questions you can determine which words would benefit you the most. You should identify which general occupations are of interest to you and what skills you have, however don’t put too much emphasis on actual job titles. Determine whom you would be happy working for, for example would you rather work in a smaller, friendlier, established family type environment or somewhere new and high-tech. Also give some thought as to how far you are willing to travel for work, do you need to stay within a few miles of your home or would you be willing to uproot and move to a new location? Answers to all of these questions will give you the keywords needed to make your online search so much easier.
