Drunk Driving And Alcoholism

by Ericka Lopez

Road accidents are one of the common causes of fatalities in America. Statistics show that there were 10.8 million people involved in motor vehicle accidents in the year 2009. From this number, 32.1% are due to drunk driving. The age range where most fatalities are counted, fall on the ages 21-54 years old. How government bodies determine alcohol intoxication in drivers is through getting the blood alcohol content. There's a device used to measure such and some require urine and blood samples from the driver to accurately determine alcohol toxicity in the blood. The US constitution permits every State to enforce their own regulations on the allowable blood alcohol content (BAC) among drivers but generally, BAC must be below 0.08%. Age also is a great factor on BAC tolerance. Some States provide stricter regulations for drivers below twenty one and penalties are given when BAC levels are above 0.5%. In Florida, all residents applying for a driver's license are asked to sign a contract to which they'll yield to random alcohol intoxication test when requested by an officer before approval of their own license.

Because fatalities due to drunk driving are highly preventable, greater focus is given on this issue. The attention is channeled on alcoholism. When alcoholism is curbed, lesser accidents related to it can be seen. Alcoholism is an intense craving for alcohol intake. Many theories were proposed as to why there are individuals who fall victim of alcohol abuse. One is heredity. The likelihood of a child to become an alcoholic in the future is higher when one of his parents abuses alcohol. Another theory is that it's a disease in the brain characterized by an abnormal function and structure. Both theories are supported with examples and so they are widely accepted by many.

The need for treatment of alcohol is thereby very important because treatment gives hope to abusers as well as their families of a better future free from that habit. There are many treatment options. There are counseling groups where treatment develops from many steps. Social interaction is important in this treatment to help addicts know that they are not alone. Some may decide to go and enroll themselves in a facility for inpatient treatment. Whatever the choice, it's always centered on the best interest of the patient.

Effective alcohol rehabilitation is focused on positive change. Not all treatment is voluntarily done by an addict. Some families and concerned friends bring loved ones who suffer from addiction but in the end are successful over the addiction. Treatment may differ in length. One must not mistakenly compare one addict to another. Every patient has different backgrounds and issues. Correct assessment is a necessary step before any therapy.
