Squeaky Clean Windows Are Possible
If you're anything like me, you have this idea that cleaning windows is a nearly impossible task to do well. In fact, I gave up on having streak free, clean windows for a time. Then, I decided that streaky windows were better than dirty windows, but I was still dissatisfied with the results. Streaky windows just aren't the same as squeaky clean, streak-free windows.
Then, I discovered a method for window cleaning that is much better than the old paper towel and spray bottle. My windows have never looked better, and I want to share my secrets with you. First off, this is not going to cost you an arm and a leg, and it isn't any harder than using a paper towel and spray bottle. Actually, I think it is easier.
The first thing to do is gather your supplies. You may find that you have some of them around the house, but you may need to pick a few up at your local home improvement store. Get out an old toothbrush, and a five-gallon bucket. Fill the five gallon bucket about half full with warm water and use a little dish detergent in the water. Next, you need to get a sponge or a scrubber - a sponge is easier to use on smaller windowpanes, while a scrubber may be easier for larger panes of glass. You need a squeegee, and a few lint free towels or disposable towels, again your choice.
If you're wondering what the toothbrush is for, you're about to find out. I like to use the toothbrush to clean the corners of the windows well. Dirt and debris likes to hide in the corners, and sometimes it is hard to get it all out with a sponge or scrubber. Just dip your toothbrush in your soap water and scrub the corners of the window you are starting with. Next, take your scrubber or your sponge and work in a circular motion on the window. Start at the top and work your way downward. Use plenty of your sudsy water to make sure you rinse away all of the dirt.
Now, you should be staring at a wet, but clean window. The next thing you need is your squeegee. One squeegee tip that I have is to make sure you keep your squeegee fitted with a fresh rubber blade. An old, dry-rotted rubber blade just won't do a very good job. Starting at the top of the window and working from left to right is how I choose to do this part. After each swipe with the squeegee, I take my disposable or lint free towel and wipe the rubber blade of my squeegee. I work my way down the window, then stand back and inspect. The results are always satisfying when I clean my windows this way.
