You Can't Set Goals without These 2
Learning how to create a realistic, strategic plan and then execute your plan (using goals) is the most important aspect of building a profitable business.
Instead of talking about how to set goals, I want to share with you 2 key elements needed in order to set and achieve your goals:
Element One: Vision Let me ask you this question: When you get to where you’re going, where will you be? For those of you who know me well, you've seen this question many times - my question to you is “have you answered it?”
If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll get lost. In order to set goals you have to know where you want to go. Just like driving a car, if you don’t know the destination and you don’t have the directions, you’ll get lost; you’ll lose time, and money. So take the time to determine your vision. From a business standpoint, you have to go beyond 6 months, depending how long you want this business. You need to think 5 years from now, 10 years from now and then back track using your goals. For example, if I want to build a business and in 5 years I want to sell it for 3 million, there are specific things I need to do in year one, and in year two. But if I don’t know where I’m going and where I want to be then how am I going to determine what I need to do now?
Take the time to think, and document your vision. Do it year by year if you have to, but do it.
Element Two: Execution One of the most crucial parts of business is understanding the importance of execution. And learning how to execute.
For instance, I can set great looking business goals, but if I’m creating a strategic blueprint of goals that I can’t execute, I will never achieve the results I seek.
Quick little side note: A lot of my clients give me the excuse of procrastination or no time or whatever excuse they can think of to get out of planning their businesses - the intangible of building a profitable business. Guess what – most excuses, especially procrastination are choices. You choose what you will and will not do.
So back to Execution: What most business owners don’t realize is that much of execution actually doesn’t have anything to do with physically doing something. It’s mental. Most of the time, it’s our emotional baggage that keeps us from taking action.
So now it’s time to be realistic and real about what you will and will not do. Once you come to terms with execution and being realistic, the goals will become clear and the action of implementing and following through will be easier.
So focus on training yourself to execute vs. just planning.
Remember, Set goals that are focused on your vision and your abilities to achieve that vision. If you don’t have the abilities to achieve your vision then you need to rethink your vision or contract out those abilities or skills that you’re weak in.
Don’t set yourself up for failure by not determining a realistic vision and planning your attack with strategic goals.
