Dark Skin, No Protection

by D. Brownlee

For years, it was believed that people of color, especially those with dark skin, were some how protected from getting cancer. The logic was that dark skin repelled the harm UV rays from the sun, offering a natural ‘shield’ from toxic, and sometimes deadly exposure.

However, recently scientist have concluded that dark skin does not offer extra protection against the threat of cancer. Furthermore, it is the belief of science that dark skin actually serves as a ‘magnet’ for harmful UV rays, which in turn increases the risk of contracting skin cancer.

Hispanics are twice as likely as whites, while Blacks are three times as likely as whites, to be diagnosed with skin cancer.

Melanin, a natural chemical found in humans, is more plenteous in dark skin individuals. It is now believed that the high amount of melanin a person has, the greater the likelihood that they may be diagnosed with skin cancer.

It has been reported that more than 70,000 new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United Kingdom. This makes skin cancer the most common form of cancer in that country.

Health professionals offer the following advise:

* Use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15

* Wear long sleeves with exposed to direct sunlight for exceed periods

* Check your skin for usual markings, including the palms of your hands and soles of your feet on a regular basis. If a bump appears odd, or does not heal quickly, consult your healthcare professional immediately.
