Is your home under attack?

by adam jackson

Is your home being attacked by a silent invader? Water, generally thought of as harmless, can do an unbelievable amount of damage to a home. Do not take this information lightly; check out each bit of info and make sure you are not at risk. Prevention can prevent huge costly repairs in the future.

For people, water is necessary for survival. However, for a house, water can be a destructive force that can lead to peeling paint, wood rot, insect infestation, a shorter lifespan of roofing and siding, and higher maintenance costs. Also, water can provide an unhealthy environment for mold to grow.

Roof: Inspect the shingles, making sure all are in good shape. Go inside the attic and look for signs of leaks. It is really easy to find leaks when it’s raining. Remember, water can run along bracing before it actually drips, so be sure to “trace” all water to the location where it entered the roof.

Windows and Doors: Check for leaks around your windows and doors, look for peeling paint, and pay special attention to the corners. Foundation and Exterior Walls: Check all plumbing where it enters the house and make sure it is sealed to keep the water out.

Plumbing: Check for leaking faucets and pipes that are “sweating.”

Termite-Damaged Material: Check for termite damage in wood materials such as walls, beams, or floors. Any wood exposed to the exterior can potentially lead to moisture intrusion or termite infestation.

Act Quickly if Water Intrusion Occurs

Do not hesitate to fix any problems you may find. If needed, hire a professional to help out. Your home is a large investment. Don’t let it devalue. Keep it healthy and it will take care of you in the long term.
