Cleaning A Condenser

by Matt James Barker

A system for transferring heat, a condenser cools gas to liquid by cooling the substance. Steam locomotives, surface condensers and refrigeration systems are three of the main types of condenser cleaning.

What they do is take the latent heat and move it to the condenser coolant. Units obviously get dirty as soon as they are put in to action, and some need condenser cleaning each year to ensure that they are clean and presentable.

Keeping the surfaces of your units clean is obviously crucial to the reliability and performance of your condenser. Many suffer from being fouled by dirt, dust, pollen, debris and leaves and surveys show that cleaning leads to an improved performance.

Four things it helps: Reduces fan speed by as much as half, the output of steam each hour can be increased by 30%, pressure is dropped by 30% and the output, in general, can rise by 20%.

Air-conditioning systems are very common today, and with the condenser unit outside it is likely to attract debris and dirt from the environment. With these, the coil must be cleaned on the intake side, and there is usually a fan that moves the air to the condenser coil.

Cleaning your condenser in four steps:

Cut any weeds, grass or vines from around the unit because they are probably obstructing any airflow to it.

Flush your coil clean by using a commercial coil clean and let dry.

Use a soft brush to clean the fins and remove any dirt that has been accumulated on to your condenser. To reach these you may have to remove the grille that protects them. Make sure that you clean your fins carefully because due to their manufacturing they are very easily damaged if mishandled. Fins can be straightened with a fin comb, this should be used carefully and is for sliding between the fins of the unit.

One to know: You should never use a garden hose to clean the fins of your condenser because the water could then turn the dirt into mud and lead to further problems.

By using a carpenter's level you can make sure that the condenser is level. If it isn't, then lift the pad and level it up using gravel or rocks. During winter and fall, your unit will be at more risk of ice damage and leaf blockage. You can cover your units or learn more by speaking to a professional.
