Snack Vending Machines: Go Healthy
Almost every office, school, and building across America is chock full of snack vending machines. They're cost effective, easy to install, and simple to fill with delicious foods - whether it be in the form of candy, chips, sandwiches, or beverages. However, with rising concerns about weight in this country, maybe we should be filling the vending machines with a little less candy and a little more healthy food.
We all have a choice, we can hit B3 and get a Snickers bar or we can hit A2 and grab the granola bar. It's not hard to figure out which button most people will hit. But sometimes the choice for a health option isn't even available in many snack vending machines. Then our choice becomes, get the fattening snack, forgo a snack altogether, or leave the office and head to the deli across the street. If you search for healthy vending machines online, you come across a lot of companies that sell only healthy options, but this isn't much better. We can't force people to eat entirely healthy or poorly.
There needs to be middle ground when it comes to the foods we eat. We can't corner people into eating one way or the other. There is no need to go out and purchase an expensive machine to suit everyone's needs. Instead, people need to compromise when someone comes to restock your vending machine. Put in those cans of soda, potato chips, and candy bars, but there are some other great items you can stick in there too. If your office owns snack vending machines that also serve sandwiches and other "fresh" items, then stock some fresh fruit. Apples, oranges, and peaches are easy to place in the machine, but make sure it's replaced if the food spoils.
If the vending machine doesn't have a refrigerated section, you can stock fruit cups. Opt for brands that use fruit juice or a light syrup rather than ones with sugary, heavy syrup. Another easy snack to have is packages of dried fruit and nuts. This is a tasty option and filling to eat. Just stay away from trail mix that has chocolate candies in them. For any packages that contain peanuts, make sure they are properly labeled for those with allergies. For those wanting a little crunch, try non-fried and whole wheat chips and crackers. Besides soda, place water and fruit juices that aren't loaded with extra sugar.
You don't have to throw out your snack vending machines. Nor do you have to buy an expensive machine that sells fruit smoothies and only whole grain chips. Instead, just stock your machines with a balance of snacks that will keep everyone satisfied.
