Checklist for selecting an aged care nursing home
Sending a loved to an aged care facility might be one of the toughest and emotionally charged decisions that you would have to make in your lifetime. However, the task that is even tougher is to decide which aged care nursing home would be best for them. Here is a simple checklist that will help you find the best nursing home for your aged loved ones:
Initial thoughts
Is the location and outward appearance of the aged care facility pleasing?
How do they treat visitors?
Do they allow you to speak freely with the residents?
Do the employees seem friendly and professional?
Do the residents appear happy and comfortable?
Do they have rooms available or is there a waiting list?
Experience and staff
Delivery of effective aged care nursing services requires that the facility has adequate experience and the staff members are professionally trained. So, look for the following things:
Do the nurses respond courteously and in a timely manner to the requests of residents?
How many nurses and personal care assistants does the aged care facility have, and what is the ratio of resident to nurses?
How many nurses are on duty in a particular shift?
What training and certifications have nurses received?
Personal and medical care
You elderly relative is being sent to an aged care nursing home because you are finding it hard to provide best possible care. But does the aged care facility offer better care than you do?
Can they arrange for emergency medical help if need arises?
Do they have a physician available on call 24X7?
What is the qualification and experience of the physician?
Can the nurses administer medicines or help residents take medicines in a timely manner?
Do they have a Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care Facility, if your loved one suffers from one of these diseases?
Do they offer occupational, or speech therapy sessions?
Do they offer round the clock assistance with activities of daily living such as mobility, eating, dressing etc?
If your relative has some special medical needs, discuss them in advance, and see if those needs can be met.
Bedsores
It may seem like a minor issue to some, but prevalence of bedsores indicate inadequate care, poor hygiene, and staffing problems (residents are not being attended to properly). So, if there is a strong prevalence of bed sores amongst residents, you know that it is not the best aged care nursing home for your loved one.
These are some basic factors that you must consider while choosing an aged care nursing home, or a Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care Facility for your elderly loved ones. However, the list is not limited to this. We will discuss some more points in our next posts.
