RSS vs. Email

by Lynette Chandler

All right, I admit it. I'm writing this in an emotionally charged situation. And no this is not about which is best, who is right and not doing one thing that will kill your business overnight. Actually this came about quite by accident when a friend asked about an article claiming that Email is doomed, RSS is the replacement and if a fellow marketer and I would agree.

Before I go on let me first say - I don't sell RSS related products, books or information courses. So really RSS has no magical hold on my opinion about it other than the true potential of the technology. I also love email marketing. It's been very good to me and truly helped build my income; wouldn't dream of going without it. So what is this article all about?

Before I continue I'd like to add that I don't have RSS related products to offer like books or other information products. So my opinion of RSS and the potential in the technology is not unfairly biased because I stand to make money from it. I am also a big fan of marketing through email and wouldn't even consider not using it. Email marketing has helped me build my income. So what are we talking about here?

Most people miss the point on RSS. RSS is not only capable of delivering newsletters or updates. Don't miss this point: RSS and email are NOT one in the same, they are very different and need to be treated according to how they are and can be utilized. RSS offers many capabilities that just aren't leveraged. FedEx got it right when they started to offer parcel tracking via RSS.

Now you want to know how RSS can help you without relating in any way to newsletters, right? Three ideas to get you going:

1. Syndication: Did you ever think about why a newspaper article can be published in many different papers all at the same time? Or wonder how a radio show can be national or global? It's called syndication. What happens is the media is published only one time and then it automatically shows up on other channels, media or in the case of RSS on websites instantly and without any other work.

So in short, how would you like it if every time you published a new article, the article appears on a bunch of other people's websites immediately? No more article submissions, no more hoping an article will be picked up.

2.Affiliate support. Quit making your affiliates copy and paste codes. How would you like it if every time you post a new teleseminar, bonus or special the same information on your affiliate's websites gets posted there instantly? Well, RSS can do that.

3.Research! Let's face it; we are all too busy to do research yes to stay on top of our industry or niches, we need to be up to date. On the latest news and happenings, what other people are discussing, what people are saying they want. You can create RSS feeds on anything that will alert you anytime something you want to know about in your niche comes up. Let the technology to the leg work for you and spend less time on your computer.

I hope from this article you've thought about doing more than just comparing email to RSS and starting thinking about the potential of this great technology.
