Borderline Personality Disorder: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment.

by James S Pendergraft

Today, we live in a world where practically everything is governed by instant gratification. From the time we wake up to the time we call it a night, we have gizmos making life a whole lot more convenient. Along with this cycle, most of us end up facing some health- related illness or the other, some that are physiological and others that are psychological.

Cause and Symptoms

Let us demystify borderline personality disorder and all the reasons as to why one cannot casually toss aside this illness. Rather, it needs to be dealt with immediately, when the symptoms arise and persist. There are two types of the disorder - one is the impulsive type and the other, as the name denotes, the borderline type.

The former can be characterized by sudden spurts of behavior change with a lack of self- control and reactions based on impulses. The latter is typified through a feeling of instability, a void and an emptiness, chronic feelings of acute depression, self destructive behavioral patterns like suicidal tendencies etc. This usually manifests in early adulthood and can take root at home, in the work place, educational institution or in the community. When a person reaches adulthood there is a tendency to be reckless, to over- indulge in substance abuse, drive over and beyond the permissible limits, diet excessively or overeat, have multiple sexual partners, over spend etc. There is a crazy need to alternate between intensity in relationships where they can close down or give into a feeling of overzealous anger, etc. One can identify a person with the disorder through the mood swings they go through that are mostly based on negative emotions, where antagonism is the predominant feature.

Treatment and Solutions

The illness can run in families, though this is not considered a genetic disorder. Treatment for the disorder can take a while, as the patient may not open up immediately, especially during talk therapy. This is to ascertain the problem and figure out when the illness manifested. Cognitive behavioral therapy is extremely effective in dealing with BPD along with psychotherapy and psychoanalytical therapy. NLP (neuro linguistic programming) as a part of the latter therapy is a wonderful medium in helping the patient deal with past situations and problems one step at a time. Sometimes there is a problem brewing in a person's mind, but it does not erupt unless something from her/his past emerges and then all hell breaks loose. These situations are often opened out during a hypnosis session where the individual is made to deal with her/his fears and based on the reaction the trained professional can help the patient handle the problem from thereon.

There are times when a patient may have to be admitted into a medical facility for observational analysis to get to the root cause of the problem. In addition to this, the individual may have to go through a course of medication to enable her/him to get on with life and deal with the illness based on what the doctor deems fit. Having a support group also helps deal with the problem and enables one to have friends who actually understand what she/he is going through.
