Stock Quotes – An Outline
Stock quotes can be considered as the most prevailing information resources for technical analysis of stocks. By definition stock quotes are information about the traded price and price changes of a particular stock listed in a stock exchange. They are crucial for stock traders to execute their trades. Getting stock quotes is the first and foremost thing in stock picking. In past, getting stock quotes with ease was really a serious problem, which is mainly responsible for limiting stock trading to particular traders, usually of particular locations. But the recent revolution in communication, mostly in mass media, made stock quotes available to all ones and is also responsible for the increased popularity of stock trades. We can classify stock quotes in to three different criteria based on the time period as live stock quotes, delayed stock quotes and historical stock quotes. Live stock quotes are the most potent and most useful type of stock quotes. These stock quotes are also known as real-time and streaming stock quotes. Live stock quotes are not usually free and are provided through specialized communication devices and trading softwares by direct access brokers or stock sites. They usually charge a fixed monthly fee or charge as per quote. Live stock quotes are vital for stock day trading, as a very small delay in stock information can deny day trader a profit making chance. As live stock quotes are made available through trading systems, they have graphic enhancements to facilitate traders. Most systems also will have alerts and triggers to automate the trading procedures. Delayed stock quotes are the most abundant type of stock quotes. One can find them virtually any where, on search portals, newspapers and journals, TV and Radio channels, company and market websites, e-mail and mobile feeds, etc. Delayed stock quotes are usually free and are so called because they have a delay of about 15 minutes. They are extensively used by small scale traders, position traders, and investors to find suitable stocks and to trade stocks. The presentations of delayed stock quotes vary greatly according to the information provider. They can range from single line information to tables and graphs. Some quotes may only contain information about the last traded price of yesterday, while some others contains a handful of information such as trading volume, trading range, yesterdays high and low prices, P/E ratio, dividend yielded etc. Historical stock quotes provide information about a particular stock somewhere of its previously traded history. They are usually represented as graphs for a particular date range. Free historical stock quotes may be hard to find but paid ones are available through trading systems. Historical stock quotes are very important to traders, especially to momentum and trend traders, to figure out stock market trends, trend change patters, and trend cycles.
