My Grandfather's Ancestral Home
Copyright (c) 2013 Jason Mitash
Ours is a closed knit family, for us family comes first. My parents and grandparents live just across the street. It's a huge support. They help us with raising the kids and other household responsibilities. The kids are also very happy as they get the privilege of spending time with their grandparents and great grandparents.
I also enjoy my grandfathers company a lot as is the case with my sister. Once while having a family dinner he happened to mention about his ancestral home which he always missed. He wished that he could spend his last days there and dies in the house in which he was born.
The next weekend we decided to take him there. As we drove out from the city and were nearing the countryside the atmosphere itself changed the greenery, the cold fresh breeze, the clear blue skies was all breath taking.
An hour later we entered the narrow road which finally led to the view of the most splendid gardens and standing majestically in the centre of the lawns was a two storey stone house with creepers climbing up to the top. At this moment I saw the brightest smile on my grandfather's face. Though old and brittle all of a sudden my grandfather was enthusiastic and energetic. He very excitedly took my children inside and started giving them a tour of the house.
The house was truly an example of simplistic yet sophisticated architecture. It had a thick 16 inch walls, six fireplaces, exceptionally large and wide windows, large square rooms, a central hall stairway and classical porticos. My children screamed with excitement and said "Great grandpa you are a king, you have a palace". To this he said "Oh yes" and from now on I will be living here as a king. We were all shocked to hear this. We returned that evening and thought about grandfather's wishes and my parents finally agreed to let them move in their ancestral home.
The house was in good condition but we thought of changing a few things. The wall cladding were put up which are thermally efficient, the new eaves lining were fixed on the existing roof so that it gives a fresh look to the entire house. The house was renovated to make them comfortable to move around with ease. The security systems were put up and the care taker and his family also agreed to move in with them so as to take care of my grandparents. The house gave the impression of being new because of the new wall cladding.Australia is being the safest for elderly people living alone and with the new security systems we were relaxed. Finally, after a month's time they moved in their ancestral home but with a promise that they will chat with us on the net everyday and come visit us on the weekends.
Though we miss them a lot but are very happy and content fulfilling their wish.
