Ten Ways to Eat an Egg

by Joe Brown

Eggs are a delicious and natural source of protein, Vitamin D, and other vitamins and minerals. Implementing eggs into your diet can help you lose weight, increase muscle and bone strength, and maintain overall good health. At roughly 15 cents per egg, they are also an affordable choice. There are a million different ways to prepare eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Boil It

Hard-boiled eggs are easy to prepare. Bring eggs to a boil. Then turn the heat off, but leave the pot on the burner for about 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse the eggs in cold water several times. Let the eggs sit in this cold bath for another 10 to 15 minutes. Drain, dry, refrigerate and enjoy. Eat hard-boiled eggs by themselves, on a salad, or add some mayonnaise and onion for delicious egg salad. Hard-boiled eggs are portable, making them nice snacks to take along to school or work.

Fry It

Fried eggs are fast and yummy. Use extra-virgin olive oil as a healthy choice to keep them from sticking to the pan. Heat the oil before adding the egg, then fry to your desired likeness. Some people like a soft yolk, while other prefer a fully cooked yolk. Serve with toast, a lean breakfast meat, or a whole grain muffin.

Poach It

Poached eggs are another fast and easy way to prepare an egg, without the oil. Just bring about a half-inch of water to boil in a frying pan. Add an egg and cook until the yolk is cooked to your liking.

Make a Bird's Nest

A bird's nest is a fun way to prepare an egg for kids. Cut a 1-1/2 inch circle in the center of a piece of bread. Use a small cookie cutter to make an interesting shape. Crack an egg into the prepared hole. Cook the egg, flipping the bread one time. When the yolk is cooked to the desired consistency, remove the "bird's nest" from the pan and enjoy.

Scramble It

Scrambled eggs are quick, easy and versatile. Beat your eggs with a bit of milk or water, then add pretty much anything desired. I often use leftover chopped veggies, cheese or meat. Or you can keep it simple by adding a pinch of salt and pepper.

Make a Quiche

Quiche recipes can be found from basic to elaborate. I like to use up all the items in the fridge by tossing them into a quiche. Use cheese, spinach, broccoli, carrots, bacon, sausage and more. Save time by using a store-bought crust. Then all you have to do is throw the ingredients together and bake.

Make an Omelet

Make a variety of omelets with cheese, meat or vegetables. Beat the eggs with a bit of milk first, pour them into the pan and cook for a few minutes. Then add your toppings, fold the omelet over, and you have a beautiful meal.

Make French Toast

French toast appeals to those of us with a bit of a sweet tooth. Beat an egg mixture of egg and milk, soak pieces of bread, then fry on a hot skillet. Serve with low-sugar syrup or preserves.

Make a Casserole

Eggs will puff up any casserole, making it a satisfying meal. Use ham, bread chunks, eggs, cheese, onions or anything else desired. Mix it all together and allow it to sit for several hours (overnight works well). Pop it in the oven in the morning for a satisfying breakfast.

Serve them Over Noodles

That's right, just fry an egg and serve over noodles. Add seasonings like garlic, sesame, pesto or other flavors you like.
