Types Of Firebricks and Their Uses
Firebrick is a common term that applies to all types of bricks that can withstand extreme temperature variations. These are refractory materials and are exclusively used for construction of ceramic kilns. Firebricks cannot be easily cut and are therefore available in a variety of shapes and sizes so as to allow different structural designs for the kilns. More importantly, Firebricks impart insulating properties and are thus regarded to be very important refractory materials.
Types Of Firebricks Firebricks are broadly classified into two categories namely hardbrick and softbrick. Hardbricks have high density and are used for their structural properties. Hardbricks are used to make components of chimneys, kilns, burner ports, etc. Softbricks on the other hand, are light weight and are used for their insulating properties. Also known as Insulating Firebricks, softbricks are used for constructing insulating liners in reduction kilns.
Firebricks & Their Grades Firebricks are graded on the basis of the ingredients used in their preparation. Fireclay is the key ingredient in Firebricks. Fireclay contains silica and alumina and both of these elements have remarkable ability to withstand extreme temperatures. The grade of a firebrick is an indicator of its suitability for a particular application. Firebricks are available in following grades:
Low-duty Firebricks: Containing 24–26% alumina, they can withstand temperature up to1750°F. Medium duty Firebricks: Containing 34–38% alumina; their temperature rating is 2700°F. High Duty Firebricks: Containing 36–40% alumina, they have a temperature rating of 2850°F. Super Duty Firebricks: Containing 40–44% alumina, they can withstand temperature up to 2900°F. High-Fired Super Duty Firebricks: Containing 40–44% alumina; their temperature rating is 3000°F–3150°F.
Firebricks & Their Shapes Firebricks are available in a variety of shapes including straights, square-edge tiles, wedges, arches, skew shaped, etc. The structural demands of kilns are easily met by Firebricks of varying shapes and dimensions.
