Why Your Life Is Beige
Do you drive a Ford Focus? Does your home lack any real design or style? Do you wear a lot of brown?
Is your life the life you dreamed of or just the life that happened to you?
I am sure there is nothing wrong with driving a Ford Focus or having beige walls if those are your dreams. The reality is that most of us don't end up with what we have because we dreamed a dream and then lived that dream. We end up with what we have because we didn't have the conviction to live our dreams and so the world gave us its choice - which is always beige!
My work as a business consultant is to help business owners achieve their dreams of success. The first problem, however, is that most owners and managers can't articulate what they want. The result being that success has eluded them.
Life is absolutely a target game. If you know where you are going then you can find the resources, tools and people to get you there. The world really does want you to succeed.
If you don't know where you are going then you can't take action and so you end up with what everyone else has - beige walls and a Ford Focus.
The first part of my consulting process is always to develop some sort of plan. The plan starts with determining the goal - this is the hard part. Surprisingly, most people can't tell you what their dreams are - not directly. The result is that I need to draw out the dreams - an hour or two of conversation and leading questions usually reveals what people really want - the dreams are always there in the background.
Once the dreams are brought to the surface and fully articulated then the process of defining the goals and writing the business plan begins. Good business plans are a lot of work but really straightforward once the dreams and goals have been determined.
If my dream is to get to Liverpool then lots of different plans can get me there - maybe I walk or hitchhike or drive or take the train or fly!
The key is to know where we want to go!
If I don't know where I want to go then it might as well be Croydon (sorry Croydon).

Life, work and play can and should be an amazing, powerful adventure but first you must have a dream, place it into your consciousness (better yet into a life and business plan) and then make the necessary decisions to make your dreams real!
