Skid Steer Loader Agricultural Attachments Overview

by Robert Leib

The skid steer loader is most definitely at home in the construction zone. It is almost impossible to enter a construction site without seeing one. And it is the same with a landscaping project. The skid steer loader has made its mark in countless landscaping applications. But what about the agricultural world?

It turns out the skid steer is just as at home on the farm as it is in the construction site. In fact, the skid steer loader was created for farm use back in the 1950s, when Minnesota turkey farmer Eddie Velo wanted a compact loader to clean out his turkey barn. So Cyril and Louis Keller, a couple of blacksmiths, created a small, two-wheel drive front-end loader, and the skid loader was born. The rights to the machine were bought by Melroe Manufacturing in North Dakota in 1959, and the skid loader went into production. In fact, less than 49 years later, Bobcat produced its 750,000th skid loader.

So, as home as a skid steer loader is on a construction site, its roots are on the farm. (Get it? Its ROOTS are on the FARM? Sorry.) So that's why there are so many agricultural attachments for it. If your main source of work is farming, large-scale gardening, or ranching, then the skid steer loader offers you a fantastic array of attachment options.

Maybe you are planning to develop a piece of land into a garden or small farm. First, attach a Brush Grapple attachment to your skid steer, and clear away all the large brush and overgrowth. Next, mow down the smaller stuff with either a Clearing Mower or Brush Mower attachment. Finally, clean it all up with a brush rake, and push it into a pile for burning in the fall or winter.

Once all of the plant matter and debris are cleared away, the valuable topsoil is exposed, and ready for tilling. But anyone who has ever operated a traditional tiller knows that it's a lot like riding a bull. And if you don't have a tractor and tiller handy, or this land is too small for your regular tractor and tiller, then the Roto-Tiller skid steer loader attachment is an absolute must.

Whether you have a garden or already have an established farming operation, then you know that one of the most important ways you can protect your crops is to keep animals out. Or, if you have a ranch, you know it's crucial to keep your animals in. For both of these operations, you'll need a fence, and this is where your skid steer loader can help you out.

Start with the auger attachment to dig post holes for your fence. This will save you a huge amount of time, as anyone who has ever used a manual post hole digger can tell you. While you can use a handheld motorized post hole digger, most of them need two people to operate, while the auger attachment keeps this as a one person operation. Then, use the Mix-N-Place cement mixer attachment to mix and pour the cement for your larger fence posts.

Once you're all done with this, there's still more farming to be done, and maybe you've got several farm implements lying around. That's when you need one of the most innovative and useful skid steer attachments, the Three-Point Adapter.

The Three-Point Adapter attachment connects to the boom of your skid steer loader and perfectly replicates the way traditional farm implements attach to the rear hitch of a tractor. Now, the skid steer loader has access to everything a tractor can do.

The Three-Point Adapter is a truly inexpensive solution because when you compare the cost of the adapter and an existing implement to the cost of buying new individual tools, it's a no-brainer.

These are just a few of the options to consider for your garden, farm or ranch. The agricultural community will benefit as much from the skid steer loader and a few attachments as the construction world already has.
