Facial Signs of Cold Sores and Intolerances
At this time of year there are so many viruses being passed around that almost everyone you speak to is suffering from or recovering from some kind of winter based illness. Runny noses and sore throats are common place and you can usually spot who is suffering from their red noses or croaky voices.
One visible virus that can easily be spotted on people's faces is that of what's commonly called cold sores. This is nothing whatsoever to do with the weather or even sore. The correct name of the virus is the herpes simplex virus, called type 1 or type 2 and can be caught on any part of the body.
What is noticeable on the face is usually type 1 and this is much more likely to recur than type 2. Like chicken pox and shingles, once caught, the virus can hide in nerve sheaths and come back time and again. It's very easily passed on from person to person via touch and although it can only be caught once, the fact that it can survive within nerve cells means that it can reappear at any later date.
It's also very difficult to hide if the sores are on the face, usually around the lips and mouth. The visible signs include a small red patch followed by a blister, or cluster of blisters which if they burst, leave a red and raw patch on the skin. The natural thing for people to do is pick at a healing scab, however, this will only serve to delay the healing process and prolong the visible effects of the cold sore.
The visible effects of cold sores commonly pass within a few days which is good news for people, especially for men and children who find that it is more difficult to disguise the appearance of any facial abnormalities, however short lived the symptoms are. Similar short term imperfections on the face can be caused by common food intolerances.
Very commonplace reactions to food intolerance and visible symptoms include a swelling of the throat to a lesser or more severe degree. In some people the tongue and glands may also swell which can make breathing difficult until it wears away. Itchy Skin, especially on more sensitive areas of the body such as the face is also a common symptom of food intolerance. Food intolerance is very different from a food allergy which is much more serious and the symptoms and effects in some cases can be fatal.
That doesn't mean that food intolerance is any less frustrating or annoying and its symptoms are no less. For many people, food intolerance can create havoc with their natural sleeping patterns and for some bring on insomnia. Whether the signs are visible or hidden, it's always a good idea to find out whether your health symptoms are the result of an intolerance which can easily be treated.
