How to Clean Your Ceramic Tiles and Glass Tiles

by Natalie Johnson

Ceramic tiles and glass tiles are ideal for your kitchen and bathroom: they are resistant to stains and spills; are hard and water resistant; are very attractive, and are easy to clean. Here's how:

1. Sweep: Sweeping removes most of the dirt that clusters on the surface of your ceramic tiles. Vacuum cleaners are also handy, especially if you have attachments that are pliable and can fit along walls or in hard to reach crevices.

2. Mop: After sweeping, use a mop with water and tile cleaner to get rid of spots and stains. It's also a good idea to mop your hardwood floors too.

3. Heavy Duty: If you need some serious scrubbing, don't hesitate to take out a toothbrush or electric scrubber. Use a detergent and rinse with warm water before mopping or drying the ceramic tile with a clean towel.

4. Soap Scum/Mildew: This is the biggest problem spot for most ceramic tile owners. After time the shower tiles, and maybe even the tiles around your bathtub, will begin to develop a black film. If you have a special kind of ceramic tile or glass tile, you may want to consult your tile manufacturer for proper cleaning instructions, but if you have traditional ceramic tiles, an all-purpose cleaner will do to remove the stain and return it to a shiny-grouted state.

Here are some more tips for cleaning your ceramic tiles:

Clean them quickly, as soon as you detect a spot, so your grout does not stain.

Don't use steel wool to clean ceramic tiles because it can scratch the finish.

Don't use bleach cleaners on your ceramic tiles - if used too frequently, harsh cleaners can discolor your ceramic tiles.

Since glass tiles are smaller and can be more sensitive, create a mixture that will clean them easily without damage. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and spray it on the tiles. Allow it to sit for five to ten minutes and use a toothbrush or other soft-bristle brush to remove the gunky buildup. Wipe the glass tiles with a cloth and wash them with some water. Then dry the glass tiles with another towel.

If you ever have to choose replacement tiles, remember that the new ones may be slightly different from the old, and due to age, may look different when beside them.

When caulking, pay close attention to areas that receive heavy water exposure. This will keep the tiles looking fresh for years to come. Ceramic tiles are a great way to keep your bathroom in good condition. All it takes is a good caulking and some direct attendance to spills and spots and you will have your ceramic tiles for a long time.
