Making History Fun With Historical Chess Sets

by Steven Barnhart

You may think it is funny if someone told you that your kid can learn about history just by playing chess. But it is true! With historical chess sets you can teach your kids history without having to grapple for their attention.

It is quite hard to teach anything to kids these days because their attention is easily diverted to their video games or the TV. But thanks to the help of historical chess sets, you will be able to grab their interest and teach them about history at the same time.

Children will only pay attention to things that interests them, if they find a subject boring then they would not focus all their attention to learning about it, and unfortunately history is one of the subjects that most children find boring. So how can you make it interesting for them to learn history? A good way is by playing chess using historical chess sets.

Historical chess sets have different looking pieces than the normal sets. The chess pieces depict different characters in history depending on what historical theme chess set you have, the characters. These chess pieces are highly detailed and sometimes brightly colored so that they can easily get a child's attention. And when your child is curious about who is the king or the rook in the chess set then it will be a good chance to teach about who the historical figures are and what they did.

If you want to teach ancient Greek mythology there is a set that contains various depictions of the gods in ancient Greece, so while you play chess with your children you can teach them the names of these gods and what are they the god of. Learning history this way certainly beats learning it from books.

If it is American History that you want your child to learn there are various historical chess sets that depict different eras in the history of the United States. You can play using pieces from the Revolutionary War and play as the colonists fighting for their freedom from the British Empire. You could even re-enact the Civil War with pieces that symbolize the Union and Confederate States. This is a great way to show your children how the Union, led by Ulysses S. Grant, fought with the Confederates, led by Robert E. Lee, it is a whole lot better with historical chess sets because they can imagine the battle unfold right at the front of their eyes.

With historical chess sets you will not have to worry about your kid's attention wandering off elsewhere. When they play using pieces with the images of historical figures they will have fun while learning about history at the same time. History has never been this much fun, with historical chess sets not only will your children learn more about history, they will also learn how to use their minds in thinking up tactics to defeat their opponent in the game. And then who knows? Maybe these historical chess sets will even instill the love of the game to your child.
