I am a prolific book reader and CD listener. Just a word to the wise, I go on line and "order" books and CD's from my local library on a weekly basis. I love mystery books and am always looking for an author I have not read before. Variety is the spice of life!

In the Sunday paper there was a review of a book written by a Swedish author, Stieg Larsson. I had never heard of him but the review sounded interesting. My library had the book and CD but I had to place an order and wait until it was available. That process took about 2 weeks but it was well worth the wait.

The story immediately engaged me to the point that I would always listen to the CD while driving, and when I got home, I would sit in my garage and continue to listen until I got to a good stopping point in the story. I was so fascinated with her story that I could not stop listening even when going to bed, so I would take a portable CD player to bed with me. I also listened while on the treadmill at the gym.

The main character is Lisbeth Salander. She was raised by a single mom. Her father, a violent ex Russian spy, would "drop" by for a visit every now and then and he beat her mother every visit. That is the environment in which this brilliant girl grew up.

The book, as well as the film, does contain adult themes like killings, nudity, rape and violence. But the story goes beyond that and is deep and intriguing. Based on this bestselling novel, the movie has now gained worldwide interest, and an English version was released in 2010 which was nominated for an academy award.

Dragon Tattoo is the first in the Stieg Larsson Millennium Trilogy, with The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest following. In the film a journalist is aided by a female hacker to seek out a girl who was raped 40 years ago. The plot is very adult in nature and not for those sensitive to such materials. The victim, Harriet, disappeared and family members believe that she was killed or kidnapped by a deranged relative within their tight yet unstable family circle. The journalist and hacker go on a journey through the grisly family history and soon realize that the family is willing to do anything to protect themselves, their secrets, and what ever else they are hiding behind.

The first book and the other two books in the series are engaging and well planned out. They are a must see, and if you want the full experience, reading the novels is a great idea as well.
