The job title of a support worker does little to explain the crucial role they play in the lives of millions of patients around the world. They are also known as healthcare assistants, healthcare support workers and clinical support workers, and normally work in hospitals or communities as part of a wider strategy of care for each individual patient. Patients may have physical difficulties, metal issues or anything else to do with their health that affects their everyday lives. <br/><br/> How do you become one? <br/><br/> You can become a support worker with little or no qualifications. You just need to have experience caring for others in a variety of settings. There are qualifications you can get though that will give you a better chance of getting a job, which are gained through studying theory, general health care and psychology then sitting theory and practical exams. <br/><br/> Typical Support Worker Tasks <br/><br/> A support workers general duties can be quite varied but should include a combination of the following: observing and documenting a patients behaviour in a number of settings, providing physical exercise assistance, taking and recording of basic vital statistics like blood pressure or weight, emotional support and general befriending, personal hygiene advice and assistance, daily lifestyle support such as shopping, cooking, job hunting and wardrobe advice. <br/><br/> These tasks might take place in a hospital, in a closed or open unit or in a patient's own home. <br/><br/> Difficulties they Face <br/><br/> Support workers have a very varied role so may find themselves in all kinds of situations with all manner of demands put upon them. Basically any difficulties a patient has, it is the support workers job to make sure they get through them. This can be extra difficult with a patient who has mental health issues as they may not be fully in control of their physical or emotional states. This can lead to violence, arguments and depression at any moment. <br/><br/> Career Progression <br/><br/> While many people lead a satisfying and happy life working in support worker jobs for many years, it is not always particularly well paid so is often seen as a stepping stone to another role. Experience as a support worker provides a fantastic base upon which to build a career in social work, nursing and finding care assistant jobs because it challenges you on many levels and gives you experience of dealing with patients with a range of physical and social issues. <br/><br/> Have you considered a career in social care? <br/><br/> <br/><br/>
