How Your Priorities Change During A Pregnancy
I remember when I was 16 years old and my older cousin was expecting his first baby, and we were having a bachelor party for him. He had gotten his girlfriend pregnant, and they decided to get married, so things were being a little rushed. We had rented a grove at the local park to throw the party for him. I remember when I finally had a chance to talk with him alone, I was asking him a number of questions about everything, and I could tell that he was a little distraught albeit excited about what was going to be happening. One of the questions I asked was what he wanted to have, a boy or a girl. I was surprised when he told me that he didn't care what sex the baby was, as long as it was born healthy. I kept imploring him to give me the real answer, and he said that it honestly did not matter to him.
I remember thinking at that moment, and many years afterwards, that he was just trained by his wife to be to give that answer. I knew he must of had a particular preference, but was afraid to tell me and others what he was really thinking. However, almost 15 years later, when my wife and I were expecting our first child, I slowly realized everything my cousin was going through, and fully understood the words that he had said to me that day. I no longer cared if I was going to have a girl or boy, I just wanted it to be healthy and happy, and have no birth defects. I think most guys who have gone through a pregnancy as well, fully understand where I am coming from. You go from wanting say, a boy to be your successor, to no longer caring about such trivial matters.
A pregnancy can really test your nerves, as there are so many things that can go wrong, and so many tests that your wife must go through, that you are in a constant state of worry. Therefore, you end up finding yourself no longer caring about having a boy or girl, and your focus becomes about the health of the child. If you've never gone through a pregnancy before, then it is hard for people to fully understand what I'm talking about, but I can assure you your priorities will change dramatically by the end.
