This is part four of an ongoing series of eco friendly blinds that are great for energy efficiency and good for the environment. We will be discussing shutters.
Plantation shutters are the oldest of the mass produced window coverings. Most are made of renewable wood or the new composite shutters which are made of a wood and PVC mixture.
Shutters are basically doors for your windows with slat (louvers) that also open and close so you can have a view. They are much thicker than other blinds and are extremely energy efficient when in the closed position. The typical R-value is a 4.81. The R-value is the ability of a product to keep the heat and cold out. An R-value of a 4.00 blocks around 75% of the heat loss of a single pain window so a shutter blocks around 80% of the heat or cold.
Wood shutters are very eco friendly in the fact that they are made of wood and the style has lasted for over 100 years. This means that they last the longest of the blinds. We have seen wood shutters over 75 years old that were still in excellent condition. Today’s wood shutters are painted with lead free paint also helping the environment.
Over the last few years, composite shutters have become extremely popular. They are made of a wood and PVC mixture with a lifespan close to regular wood shutters. They are typically 25% less expensive and best of all, totally recyclable. Our main supplier of composite shutters is Comfortex and they actually have a recycling facility and will pay for returned composite shutters.
