How To Become A Royal Marines Commando

by Richard McMunn

If you are looking for a challenging, highly rewarding career in the military, then becoming a UK Royal Marines commando might just be the ticket. However, not everyone is cut out for this job. To ensure that you have the best chance of being accepted, you need to know the requirements, as well as the process that you will undergo. There are two very hard qualifications to become a Royal Marines commando.

First, you must be male. Second, you must be a citizen of the Commonwealth, or a citizen of the Irish Republic. No others are admitted to the Royal Marines. Next, you must undergo the testing provided by the Royal Navy. Before you decide that joining the Royal Marines as a commando is right for you, you should talk with a recruiter about your options. You should also understand that such a career can last for 18 years or until you turn 40 (55 in some cases). However, you can turn in your notice 12 months in advance once you have served for three full years, in most cases.

The testing process for the Royal Marines begins with aptitude tests. These will measure your reasoning capabilities, as well as your knowledge and use of the English language. Numeracy tests are also provided, as are mechanical comprehension tests. You will also have to undergo an IA for both literacy and numeracy if your score is too low (below level 1 for maths and English). After successfully completing your tests, you will have to go through a full individual interview, as well as a medical examination. To become a Royal Marine, you will also have to complete 2 2.4 kilometre runs within no less than 12 minutes and 30 seconds for the first one. This is to prepare you for the full three mile run later.

The second run must be completed in at least 10 minutes and 30 seconds. There is a one-minute rest between the runs. After passing the runs and other examinations, you will have to undergo two and a half days of physical exercise and another interview during the Potential Royal Marine Course. If you pass these examinations and the interviews are favourable, then you will be considered for admittance to the Royal Marines as a commando. However, not all applicants are successful here, for a variety of reasons. You must adopt the Commando State of Mind when going through selection; this is very important.
