Major Types of Thread Gauges

by FrankXu

Thread gauges are used to measure the pitch on a part of a machine. They are an essential tool for accurate repairs. For instance, they are used in pipe fittings and repairs to analyze the threads on a pipe and therefore determine what kind of pipe fittings will go together. A difference of a millimeter can lead to a leaky pipe. Here, different kinds of gauges are used to accurately figure out the kind of pipe needed. Thread pitch gauges are specifically built to match the turns per pitch (TPI) of a part. Thread ring gauges measure the accuracy of the threads on the surface of a machine part. Thread plug gauges are used to check thread compliance. A thread gauge is placed on the pipe such that the depressions on the gauge fit onto the threads of the pipe. One may have to try many types of gauges before they kind find one that fits perfectly and take down the reading on the gauge. One can determine the type of fitting needed by looking at the reference chart.

Thread gauges are also used to measure thread pitches of nuts and bolts. Also the right kinds of tools are needed to loosen or tighten screws otherwise they could break under pressure. Gauges are used during inspection of factories to determine the accuracy and quality of machine parts. Lead of a thread is the distance it covers in one rotation of the screw and pitch is the distance between two crests. Metric threads are identified by the distance per thread and the regular threads are identified by the number of threads per inch and therefore metric thread gauges do not measure threads per inch but list the distance between the threads.

Thread plug gauges are used make measurements of the inner threaded area of a cylindrical part. It is used to check the accuracy of the pitch diameter. For a smaller part, a double ended thread plug gauge is used. While the “go” part of the gauge passes through the pipe, the “no-go” end should not be able to pass through the entire pipe or nut.

Thread gauges need to undergo strict testing for quality control as the accuracy of the product is essential. High precision testing equipment will give better results and weed out defective products, thus the products shipped out have passed all quality checks and are calibrated. Some gauges come with a calibration certificate. Most manufacturers store regular thread gauges enabling immediate supply when required. In addition to this, some companies manufacture gauges according to the client’s specifications, including its packaging. The client needs to provide measurements of diameter and pitch, type of gauge, quantity etc while placing an order. This may require a longer delivery time of about one or two weeks. If a shipment is found defective, then the company bears the cost of the shipment and delivers a new shipment as soon as possible. A manufacturer preferred by the masses is one who manufactures accurate gauges with timely deliveries at affordable prices.
