Changing Hankook Tires During In An Emergency

by John Cory

When you buy Hankook tires, you can expect to enjoy riding on them for thousands of miles, but you can never expect when you might have to deal with a tire accident. You never know when you may have a blow out or a flat and have to pull over and change a tire, so it is good to understand what to do in that scenario. Unfortunately, not everyone takes the time to learn how to perform this important task and will end up stranded as a result.

Before you take a vehicle out on the road, you have to check to make sure that there is a jack, lug wrench, and spare tire in the trunk or wherever they are stored. Making sure that you have all of these things in your vehicle is the first thing you should do to ensure that you won't be stranded when you lose a tire.

Now, when you find yourself experiencing a flat or blowout, pull over to the flattest, safest spot you can possibly can. Before jacking up your vehicle, you should put on your E-brake and activate your hazard lights so that other motorists notice you. Find some heavy object, if at all possible, to place in front of and behind the tires that are not being changed.

You want to jack the vehicle up near the flat tire, so put the jack under the frame in that area. For folks that are not sure of where they should set the jack, there are special notches on many modern vehicles that indicate where the head of the jack should push against the frame. If you have trouble finding this special notch, you should find a page in your owner's manual that illustrates the area for you.

Get your jack in place and begin jacking it up until it provides a nominal amount of support to the vehicle but leaves the tire on the ground. With your wrench in hand, you may now begin taking off the nuts holding the tire in place. This part does take a bit of strong arming, but with the appropriate amount of leverage, most people should be able to break the nuts and get them to come loose. Now you can stop jacking up the vehicle until there is enough space for you to get the tire removed from the vehicle and set aside.

Taking off damaged Hankook tires should be done with a good deal of caution, particularly if you are on the side of the busy road. Once removed, carefully place the spare on the hub and snugly tighten the lug nuts with your hand and then the wrench. With your spare in place you're finally good to go, but don't hesitate to visit your local tire shop for a permanent replacement.
