Where Do We Need Greatest Advances In Software?
Games software is only going to get us so far…
Software (or computer software) is basically a collection of computer programs or applications which tell a computer or device what it is supposed to do. While hardware is the physical metal and silicon components of a device that carries the electronic signals and stores data, it is software, which handles programs, mathematical decisions and documents all the data that is shuttled around.

Software is in every computer and is the key to making best use of our growing pile of devices. Without new and improving software we would still be stuck with the now crude and inefficient computers we had when they were first mass produced. So considering where we are now, where would our world benefit best from an advance in software technologies?

Online

The internet is the greatest invention in our history. Better than fire, better than white bread, antibiotics and even the electric guitar. Despite the internet being a prime location for software updates and regular advances, it can always do with being better. To take internet to the next level we need to see an increase in the rate at which software improves. The mobile internet movement is a prime example of this in action as it has opened up the web to a whole new range of people and made the internet even more a part of users lives than it was before. More advances are needed though in terms of security software and data protection as criminals are increasingly focusing their attention on exploiting holes in the web.

Transport

Our population is increasing year on year and this means that there are ever more vehicles on our roads, more goods being shipped around the country and more commuters pouring in and out of our city centres daily. To cope with this a greater advance in transport and logistics software is needed. For example when even one motorway is shut it can have a multi-million pound knock on effect for the UK economy as deliveries are delayed and business is held up. Logistics management software and supply chain event management software are areas where improvements could have a massive effect on the future of UK logistics, if only they can push to the next level.

Third World

To help the poorer countries in the world to fight their way out of poverty, creating free and easy to use software that can be used to implement a range of strategies, both humanitarian and infrastructure based, would massively improve the general standard of living. Cheap and easy access to the internet and software can be a major turning point for these nations.
