It was in the early 15th century when posters were first used by people. These artworks came into existence to replace the role of the Town Criers announcing everything from burials, goods, lost objects, convocations, and other important occasions. With the artistic mind of Michel Papillon, these first posters were used to replace the Town Criers. Then, in 1628, Theophraste Renaudot made the first advertising posters.

The changes that took place with the role of posters since 15th century have been carried on until today. Nowadays, posters are used in many ways.

Uses of Posters

Government

Before when television, radio and Internet came into existence, the government used the posters as official "notices" or "edicts". However, now that the Internet, TV and radio are here, the posters are no longer used as a media to reach the citizens with an important message; instead, they are used to inform employees of their legal rights and for procedures on how to exercise such rights. There are cases also where the government used the posters as a way to warn people about the danger or hazards of waste areas, for example.

Apart from being used as edicts, the posters are used for propaganda, as well. These posters are called propaganda posters, which are used in campaigns such as political campaigns, awareness campaigns, and many other campaigns.

Business

One of the main uses of posters in the business is for advertisement. It cannot be denied that businesses use posters for advertising purposes. Posters are used for advertising services, products or anything. Also, posters are used as movie posters used to share some vital information and campaign a film among the people. Other than that, there are multinational companies who design varied kinds of posters frequently and display them within the office premises to motivate the employees or to remind them of the company's core philosophy.

The artists' view in making posters

Since posters are vital to the government and businesses, publishers always have to look for the best artists to produce posters that can illustrate the purpose of the posters. Luckily, the visual nature of the posters has never failed to rouse the interest of the most creative artists like Banksy. For the poster artists, designing and making posters are never considered a job, but a means to express their artistic ideas and provide people an aesthetic medium of information. Moreover, they view them as an important and rewarding challenge.

In conclusion, whatever is the purpose of the posters, whatever are their designs, they all aim one thing, and that is to promote something through a visual imagery and information. It could be a change in the behavior.
