KJ Doughton - Original Metallica Fan Club Head and OrganiserInterview 1st November 2005FWMT: Give us an outline of your history with Metallica.KJ Doughton: I grew up in Oregon, and during high school, heavy metal was my life. I traded tapes, wrote for fanzines, met bands, and devoted my life to promoting the metal genre in various ways. In 1982, a tape trader from Los Angeles named Patrick Scott sent me the first Metallica demo tape, asking for some local band’s demo in return. That was a typical tape trader’s relationship – you would set up contacts in every corner of the world, and send them regional music in exchange for obscure tapes from their respective areas. It was like a huge net that allowed you the power to pull in material from unsigned bands, from every nook and cranny of the globe. Patrick was the light man for Metallica at the time. The demo tape he sent included “Hit the Lights,” “The Mechanix,” “Motorbreath,” and “Jump in the Fire.” After hearing the demo, I freaked out.
